The Kipuka Garden is part of the first phase of development of the Hawaiian healing center. This herb garden, or mala la'au is the foundation for the self-care support program. A source of Hawaiian plants for medicine and food, the mala serves as a nursery of la'au and as a living classroom, for ohana and kupuna. One goal is to provide kupuna with plants to use in their home gardens, for their own self-care.
The plants in the Garden have been selected for their abilities to control harmful inflammation (ie. pehupehu) and to mitigate chronic diseases (ie. ma'ima'i). The la'au are also effective against some infections that are found in our Puna communities.
Our initial support program is called Kupuna Strong!, and is designed to help our elders to restore balance, harmony and energy to their bodies. This program will be launched upon completion and activation of the Kipuka Center for Health & Wellness.
The Kipuka Garden was created by Kumu Dane Kaohelani Silva. Kumu Dane was a kahuna la'au lapa'au, following in the footsteps of his kupuna, who were leaders in the realm of Hawaiian medicine and healing arts. Sadly, we lost our friend and valued colleague in December 2022. Kumu Dane was a tremendous source of knowledge, energy, and inspiration. He will be sorely missed by the community, and we will honor Dane's legacy by continuing his work at the Kipuka Garden. Thank you to Luana Jones for taking up the duties at the Kipuka Garden in his absence.
"Creating a mala la'au and halau for the community has been a lifelong dream of our teachers and fellow practitioners". Kumu Dane
